How It Works
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, so to convert centimeters to inches you divide the number of centimeters by 2.54. To go the other way, multiply inches by 2.54.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many centimeters are in one inch?
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. That is the official definition used worldwide, so the conversion is exact rather than approximate.
Is the conversion the same for screen sizes and physical objects?
Yes. Centimeters and inches are units of length, so the same 2.54 factor applies whether you are measuring a screen diagonal, a piece of furniture, or a person's height.
Why does my ruler show both inches and centimeters?
Most rulers print both scales because the inch is common in the United States and the centimeter is used almost everywhere else. The 2.54 ratio is what lines up the two scales.
