How It Works
The number of years until retirement is your retirement age minus your current age. Your current savings compound monthly at one twelfth of the annual return rate over those years.
Your monthly contribution is treated as an end-of-month deposit (an ordinary annuity) that compounds from the month it is made until retirement. The projected balance is the compounded savings plus the future value of all contributions.
The projection assumes a steady average return and constant contributions. Real returns fluctuate, so the result is an estimate, not a guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
What return rate should I use for retirement planning?
A diversified stock-and-bond portfolio has historically returned around 5–7% after inflation. Many planners use a conservative 5–6% real return for long-term projections.
Does this account for inflation or withdrawals?
No. The result is the nominal balance at retirement. To plan withdrawals, divide that balance by roughly 25 (the 4% rule) for an estimated safe first-year withdrawal.
Should I include Social Security or a pension?
This calculator projects only your savings balance. Add expected Social Security or pension income separately when building your full retirement budget.
