How It Works
The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip.
The per-person total is the grand total divided by the number of people, and the per-person tip is the tip amount divided by the number of people.
Both the tip and the total are split evenly across everyone. If you want to split based on what each person ordered, divide the bill manually and apply the tip percentage to each share.
Worked example: an $85 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of 85 × 18 / 100 = $15.30, for a total of $100.30. Split between 2 people, each pays $50.15.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the United States, 15–20% is typical for sit-down restaurant service, with 18% as a common middle ground. Tip more for exceptional service or less for poor service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically more precise, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter as the base.
How do I split the tip evenly across people?
Enter the number of people in the "Split between" field and the calculator divides both the tip and the total equally among everyone.
How much should I tip for takeout or delivery?
For delivery, 10–15% or a minimum of $3–5 is common. For takeout counter orders a small tip of $1–2 is appreciated but not expected the way it is for table service.
Should I tip on drinks at a bar?
A common rule is $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. For an open bar, tip generously at the start or end of the night.
What if the bill already includes a service charge?
A mandatory service charge usually goes to the house, not the server. If it is labeled a gratuity it may be shared with staff, but adding an extra 5–10% in cash is a safe way to ensure your server is tipped directly.
