How It Works

Each input can be a whole number, a fraction (like 3/4), or a mixed number (like 1 1/2). Internally every input is converted to a single improper fraction with a numerator and denominator.

Operations follow the standard fraction rules: to add or subtract, fractions are rewritten with a common denominator; to multiply, numerators and denominators are multiplied; to divide, the second fraction is flipped and then multiplied.

The result is simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, it is shown as a mixed number as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter a mixed number like 1 1/2?
Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction — for example, "1 1/2". The parser handles whole numbers, plain fractions, and mixed numbers.
What happens when I divide by zero?
The calculator shows an error message. Division by zero is undefined, so no result is returned until you enter a non-zero second fraction.
Is the result always simplified?
Yes. The numerator and denominator are divided by their greatest common divisor, and any result greater than 1 is also shown as a mixed number.
