How It Works

The initial amount compounds at the annual return rate, converted to a monthly rate by dividing by 12. Each month the balance grows by (balance × monthly rate), which is the standard monthly compounding model.

Monthly contributions are treated as made at the end of each month (an ordinary annuity). Each contribution then compounds from the month it is made until the end of the time horizon.

Total contributed is your initial amount plus every monthly contribution over the horizon. Total growth is the final balance minus total contributed — the portion of your balance that came from investment returns rather than from money you put in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this account for inflation or taxes?
No. The result is the nominal future value. Real purchasing power will be lower after inflation, and investment gains may be taxed depending on the account type.
Are contributions made at the start or end of each month?
Contributions are treated as end-of-month (ordinary annuity), the common convention for recurring deposits. Start-of-month contributions would grow slightly more.
What return rate should I use?
Historical stock market returns have averaged around 7–10% annually before inflation, but returns vary widely by asset mix and time period. Use a conservative long-term estimate for planning.
