How It Works
In forward mode, the discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage divided by 100. The sale price is the original price minus that discount amount.
In reverse mode, the sale price is what you actually pay, which equals the original price times (1 − discount/100). Rearranging gives the original: original = sale price / (1 − discount/100).
The amount saved is always the difference between the original price and the sale price, no matter which direction you start from.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between percent off and a dollar discount?
Percent off is a discount calculated as a percentage of the original price. A dollar discount is a fixed amount. This calculator handles percent-off discounts.
Can I figure out the original price from the sale price?
Yes. Switch to reverse mode, enter the sale price and the discount percentage, and the calculator returns the original price.
Does this include sales tax?
No. The discount is applied to the pre-tax price. Use the sales tax calculator to add tax to the sale price afterward.
